The First Published Results on a Cat GLP-1 Drug Didn't Test Weight Loss at All

GLP-1 drugs modeled on Ozempic are now in early trials for cats, and headlines have gotten ahead of the science. The only published results so far come from a safety study in sixteen healthy, normal-weight cats, not the weight-loss trials still underway, while real cases of pets accidentally exposed to human GLP-1 medication are already showing up in emergency rooms.
Sixteen healthy cats, twelve injections
Headlines calling it "Ozempic for cats" started showing up this summer. The framing sticks because it is a good hook. GLP-1 drugs reshaped how millions of people think about weight loss, and two companies are now running early trials of similar drugs in cats. What most of the coverage skips is that the only published data so far comes from a study that was never designed to show weight loss. It was designed to find out whether the drug was safe to give a cat at all, and the sixteen cats in it were not overweight to begin with.
At the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine's annual forum in Seattle in June, a pharmacologist from Akston Biosciences named Andrea Delpero presented data on three experimental GLP-1 fusion proteins the company had built for cats, including one called AKS-562c. The study used sixteen healthy male cats, roughly a year old, housed together and fed a single commercial maintenance diet. None of them needed to lose weight. That was deliberate. Before testing whether a drug helps an overweight cat, you find out whether a normal cat tolerates it. Each cat received twelve weekly injections at doses that stepped up over the course of the study, from 0.1 to 0.4 mg/kg.
AKS-562c produced the largest and most consistent drop in food intake of the three candidates. "It was very significant to their starting food intake," Delpero said in an interview after her presentation. The cats' mean body weight was significantly lower than the other groups from day 14 through day 84, and Delpero was careful about what that did and did not mean. These were young, normal-weight cats that would ordinarily keep gaining weight as they grew. AKS-562c did not make them lose weight. It flattened a growth curve that, in the untreated groups, kept climbing.
The safety readouts were the actual point of the exercise, and they came back clean. Bloodwork stayed in reference range throughout, including fasting glucose and liver enzymes, and the investigators reported no injection site reactions and no antibodies forming against the drug, a real concern with any injected protein given repeatedly.
That is a legitimate, useful result. It is also a much narrower one than "cats can now take Ozempic." Nobody has yet published data on what AKS-562c does in a cat that is actually overweight, which is the entire point of developing it.
The trials that would answer it
Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine, under a roughly quarter-million-dollar award from Akston Biosciences, opened an eleven-week clinical trial in late 2025 enrolling client-owned cats that were actually overweight or obese, with room to expand from 70 cats up to 140. Patrick Carney, the Cornell clinical scientist leading it, framed the stakes plainly when the trial launched: "Delivering a tool for veterinarians to more effectively manage cats with excess weight would be a true breakthrough, offering a safe and effective option where one doesn't currently exist."
As of mid-August 2026, no weight-loss results from that trial have been published or presented, even though enrollment began months ago. Clinical trials routinely take longer to report out than their enrollment period alone would suggest, since the data still has to be analyzed and written up after the last cat finishes dosing.
A second company, OKAVA Pharmaceuticals, is running a different approach in parallel. Rather than a weekly injection, its candidate, OKV-119, is a matchstick-sized implant placed under a cat's skin during a normal vet visit, delivering a steady dose of the older GLP-1 drug exenatide for up to six months. That trial, called MEOW-1, is enrolling at least 50 overweight or obese cats and is registered with the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine as an investigational drug study. OKAVA had pointed to results arriving sometime in summer 2026. Nothing had been made public by mid-August 2026.
Both of these trials are run and paid for by the companies trying to bring the drug to market. That is completely standard for veterinary drug development and it does not make the science invalid. It does mean the confident quotes about breakthroughs are coming from people with a direct financial stake in the outcome, and the eventual weight-loss numbers deserve the same scrutiny anyone would give a similar claim from a human pharmaceutical trial sponsor.
Dogs are even further behind
There is no purpose-built GLP-1 drug in a canine trial at all right now. The one published dog study used liraglutide, a GLP-1 drug developed for people, dosed off-label. Researchers at two Turkish veterinary schools gave seven obese senior Golden Retrievers a subcutaneous liraglutide injection alongside a portion-controlled commercial diet for 40 days, comparing them against obese dogs on the same diet without the drug, and a lean control group.
The treated dogs' cholesterol and triglycerides dropped significantly, and daily appetite testing showed a clear drop in food intake. Body weight came down too, by about 13 percent on average. With only seven dogs in the group, that difference did not reach statistical significance, which has not stopped several outlets covering the pet weight-loss drug trend from repeating the 13 percent figure as a settled finding. The researchers themselves did not claim it, and said explicitly that larger, longer trials were needed before liraglutide could be considered a real option for dogs.
This one was independent academic research with no drug company funding, the opposite financial arrangement from the two cat trials.
Nothing here is available to a vet yet
No GLP-1 drug of any kind is approved by the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine for use in a dog or cat. Everything described above is investigational, running inside a research protocol, under veterinary supervision, with the dosing and safety data still being worked out one study at a time. There is no prescription version, no compounded version a regular vet can offer, and no responsible way to approximate one at home. A dog and a cat do not process drugs the way a person does. The empirical dose-finding work in the Turkish and Akston studies exists precisely because nobody knew the right starting point going in.
The pens in your own refrigerator
While the pharmaceutical versions are still years from a prescription pad, a real hazard has already shown up in veterinary emergency rooms: pets getting into their owners' human GLP-1 medication.
"If you're not paying close attention, Ozempic can be easily confused with insulin," said Dr. Renee Schmid, a senior veterinary toxicologist and director of veterinary medicine at Pet Poison Helpline. Many diabetic pets take insulin by injection, semaglutide pens now look similar, and the two often live in the same refrigerator door.
Pet Poison Helpline has documented a Siberian Husky whose pet sitter accidentally gave her several doses of Ozempic instead of her prescribed insulin. The dog became lethargic and began vomiting, spent two days hospitalized with hypoglycemia, and recovered. A cat named Mario was mistakenly given his owner's Ozempic while being cared for by a relative and arrived at the emergency clinic nearly comatose, severely hypoglycemic and dehydrated, needing dextrose and intravenous fluids to recover. A third case involved a wolf hybrid in New Mexico that simply chewed through an Ozempic pen left within reach.
Where that leaves an overweight pet today
None of the research above changes what works for an overweight dog or cat today, which is still a calorie target set by a vet, food measured on a scale rather than scooped, and regular rechecks as the weight comes down. The GLP-1 story is worth following. The early safety data looks clean so far, and the science is moving quickly for once. It just is not a plan yet, and for now it is something to ask a vet about out of curiosity rather than something to expect them to prescribe.
